Frequently Asked Questions
What is PPF and who can open it?+
Public Provident Fund is a government-backed savings scheme with 15-year lock-in. Any Indian resident individual can open one account at a post office or designated bank. NRIs cannot open a new PPF account.
What is the current PPF interest rate?+
The government revises PPF rates quarterly. The current rate is 7.1% per annum, compounded annually. Interest is calculated on the minimum balance between 5th and last day of each month.
What is the PPF deposit limit?+
Minimum ₹500 per year; maximum ₹1,50,000 per financial year. You can invest in 1–12 instalments. Deposits above ₹1.5L do not earn interest and are returned without interest.
Can I extend PPF beyond 15 years?+
Yes — in blocks of 5 years with or without contribution. With contribution: keep investing and earning interest. Without contribution: existing balance earns 7.1% with no new deposits needed.
What is the tax benefit of PPF?+
PPF enjoys EEE status — contributions are deductible under Section 80C (up to ₹1.5L), interest earned is tax-free, and maturity amount is completely tax-free. Best tax-saving fixed return instrument.
Can I take a loan against PPF?+
Yes — from 3rd to 6th financial year, you can take a loan up to 25% of balance at end of 2nd preceding year. Interest rate is 1% above PPF rate. Must be repaid within 36 months.
⚠️ PPF interest rate is set by the Government of India and revised quarterly. Results shown are estimates. Always verify current rate at your bank or post office before making investment decisions.
